La Terza Madre

In 1977, Italian filmmaker Dario Argento directed Suspiria, a bizarre, GORGEOUS, gruesome and nightmarish horror film. In the 1980s, he then directed a (lackluster, alas) second film, Inferno, and rumors among horror movie fans began about a third installment, an end to what was seen as a trilogy.

Well, here we are, thirty-one years later, and that third film is now out. Released in Italy in 2007, La Terza Madre -- Italian for "The Third Mother," a name drawing upon the Thomas de Quincey origins to the central supernatural figures of this trio of films -- has received a release stateside this weekend, appearing under the title The Mother of Tears (not so strange as it might seem, this is a direct translation of the central antagonist's name, Mater Lachrymarum). The release is limited, alas, because it's got the two strikes of being both foreign AND a horror film.

Well, Argento and his new movie (co-written with American spooky movie scenarists Jace Anderson and Adam Gierasch) has gotten a nice write up in the New York Times.

And my lucky bastid of a friend and fellow New England Horror Writer, LL Soares, has seen the movie and written a review up at Fearzone.

Will I be able to see this in theatres? Here's hoping!!!
