Driving home on Tuesday, I heard the news that John Updike died from lung cancer (on NPR, subsequent to a Neil Gaiman interview). A real shame. Though he was a fine novelist, the short form is where he really excelled for me. "A&P" is one of those short stories that lingers with me (over 15 years after first reading), and his collection Trust Me remains a veritable treasure chest of short fiction. I've a pair of his novels on my shelf, as yet unread -- The Witches of Eastwick and Rabbit Redux -- which I intend to read next (when I am done with Oates' A Garden of Earthly Delights).
