there!, Hello

2008 Reading List Book Number 9

Sackett by Louis L'amour. A slender western (151 pages), which tells the tale of William Tell Sackett, a homely (just ask him), uneducated (though he's reading Law books to improve on that) cowboy with a sense of justice, self reliance, and community responsibility who finds gold and all the petty evils that come along with it. This is the first L'amour I've ever read, and I rather enjoyed it. The prose style is unadorned but utilizes beautiful imagery. As it turns out, this is book four in a series about the Sackett family, but it (much like its protagonist)stands quite easily on its own.
