there!, Hello

Another 2008 Book Read

2008 Books I've read list:
5) Dungeon Crawl Classics vol 51.5: The Sinister Secret of Whiterock (Goodman Games, 2007). At a scant 16 pages (full color cover exterior, blue and white cover interior, and black and white throughout the module itself), this one is a bare bones dungeon crawl for 1-3 level characters for the 3.5 edition Dungeons and Dragons game. Essentially, this slender volume pits characters against the inhabitants of a small set of Gnomish ruins (most of which are original to this module). This module offers a possible connection to Dungeon Crawl Classics vol 51: Castle Whiterock (a mega sized, boxed set dungeon crawl). There is little substance to this adventure, alas. With one map, three player handouts (one of which is debatable if it even shows up in the game!), and a setting with only a dozen or so rooms, this sucker is certainly succinct. The suggestions for further adventures (all of which involve other Dungeon Crawl Classics modules, naturally) are rather pedestrian. However, with a rather inviting pricetag of $2, this module is useful to Dungeon Masters looking for a simple enough jump start to a campaign (either for Castle Whiterock or home brewed), a side story on an already engaged campaign, or a one-shot, brief dungeon delve.

The writing is serviceable, though there are a few glaring oversights (e.g. when one of the hooks for involving the players in this adventure is the sighting of an unusual owl bear on the hill where the dungeon is located, placement of the actual creature should not lead the DM to wonder just how in the Hell it got out in the first place...).
