there!, Hello

mansions along the waterfront

So, NECON (the northeastern conference of writers) is happening next weekend, and Trista and I are booked to attend. Pete and the crew of profs here at the U got geeked when I mentioned it was at Salve Regina (sal-VAY ruh-GEE-na):

"A bunch of old mansions along the waterfront. Great views, great restaraunts, great bars... You're actually staying there?"

Never have men and women in their 40s, 50s, 60s, looked more like envious children. And these people ain't broke. Not by any means. I can't help but smile.

Well, my promotion went through yesterday. Pay hike retroactive back to July 4. I'm now making more money than I ever have before, and I have the delight of telling folks I am a "Research Engineer with the Physiology and Neurology departments of the Universtity of Massachusetts Medical School".

I dropped that title a little early (back when the promotion was announced, but not officially/bureaucratically recognized) at a wedding reception a month ago, and a table full of established MDs regarded me as something of a peer. What's worse, I can actually walk-the-walk, not just t-the-t. Coming from the background of being something of a wage slave kid (my parents weren't broke, but they weren't doctors and lawyers) and often feeling outclassed by the educated elite (above referenced doctors and lawyers), this is terribly exciting!

Saw *Shaolin Soccer* on the big screen last night. A hoot and a howl, great gem of a picture. SFX extravaganza which has what most American SFX extravaganzas don't -- heart to spare, a real sense of fun, and Story. 4 stars out of 4. A perfect movie!
